Vimeo is a video-sharing website on which people can watch videos, comment on others, and share content worldwide. They recently made 'Vimeo Originals', a service that allows people to watch films made for Vimeo. This idea is similar to that of Netflix's. Netflix create original TV series and films. By doing this, Vimeo have become a new competitor of Netflix. The threats Vimeo would create for Netflix is the idea of their original works being more successful therefore, taking away a demographic of Netflix's.
This links to Marc Prensky's theory of digital natives; the idea that the new generation want everything on demand and be able to watch it in any format. By Vimeo Originals taking off, it highlights the idea that digital natives are always looking for new and exciting things to watch and be entertained by them online. Once digital natives find something that they like, such as Netflix, they will influence each other to use this platform. This is why strong branding and unique content is crucial for platforms in order for them to be liked by digital natives and make a profit.
However, it is clear Vimeo's ideas of becoming a subscription service like Netflix have folded.
This therefore prevents them from overtaking Netflix as a huge contributor to the film industry. Before this idea was announce to have folded, it was seen as a threat for Netflix as Vimeo still attracts a large audience.
Another example of a platform that is a potential threat to Netflix is 'Next Up'.
Next Up is a comedy streaming platform that you have to subscribe to in order to access. This could be seen as a threat of Netflix's as individuals may choose to subscribe to them instead of Netflix in order to access new comedy acts. Comedy is a large section of Netflix's offer and they may be effected by up and coming platforms such as Next Up. Below is an example of how Up Next is branded, highlighting its mature nature and simplistic approach to comedy - something that may find attractive.
Next Up unlike Netflix have focused on a very specific demographic of people - those who like stand up comedy. This may effect their profits as, unlike Netflix, they do not offer a wide range of shows.
