News Provision in the Online Age - Anna

Below is a video from the 1980s about how they were developing technology in order to receive news stories on computers. This, at the time, was a long process in which only a few people had access to.

The next video shows how news is presented today and what many expect it to look like in the coming future. Many editors struggle with keeping their news platform up to date and  relevant to the society that it is functioning in. For example, the Independent say that they struggle to sell more copies of their newspaper due to the fact that they value the idea of telling truthful stories - something many find boring.

New platforms that have emerged since beginning of the century are able to present news in an exciting way that digital natives will be engaged by and will invest in. This also helps the development of technology as more money is invested in making enhanced programs to share news with people.

1) FACEBOOK

Facebook allows its users to gain access to news stories in a way that is incorporated into their every day lives. For example, Facebook will suggest news stories for its users to read/watch, based on the things that they have liked. By showing an interest in a news category, FB is notified and will continue to present news to the user in new ways. They may also send a notification to the user when big events happen. Another way they share news is by allowing people to mark whether they are safe or not during an event. For example, in the London terrorist attacks, you were able to mark if you were okay or not.

2) TWITTER
News can be accessed through twitter due to how quickly it is for people to post about events and its easy accessibility. For example, many people head to twitter as soon as an event occurs to document and share what has happened in a simple way. President Donald Trump is known for his use of twitter. He often comments on huge political topics on the platform, sparking the debate as to whether or not this is appropriate for the president to do.

3) INSTAGRAM

Due to Instagram being a video and photo sharing platform, it allows of news stories to be accompanied by relevant media that will gain the interest of digital natives. This is an informal way of sharing news stories with the masses. Instagram is often used to share celebrity news and less important news.

4) SNAPCHAT

Snapchat, in recent years, have developed an 'Discover' pay where they share news stories from numerous broadcasters such as The Sun, Brother, Glamour, Vice, E News, Vogue, MTV and, The Daily Mail. These news stories are often covering gossip and less formal news stories. Moreover, it allows for Snapchat to present news to a wide number of people. The vast number of users are in their teens - changing the demographic of who the news stories are aimed at.

Overall, we can see how the way we receive news has changed dramatically since the 1980s. From this, we can also predict how we will receive news in the future.
