3 column script - Lucy

What the reporter will say/ask:

(Opening sequence no speech)

Hi I’m Lucy Hopeton and this is Student Talk News and today we are going to be discussing if there's enough mental health support for students at university.

Voice over of the reporter: talking about our researched statistics over the establishing shots.

Due to crippling debts, competitive job markets and the uncertainty of prospects after university, there is a tremendous amount of pressure on this year’s new intake of students.

One in four students are waiting to use counselling services.

I'm at Middlesex university to see what the university and the students have to say about our news topic.

Chat 1
There's quite a lot. There's all the stuff with the Uni help. Like everyone down in the MDX house, there's loads of people to talk to.

Chat 2 (Jack Birrell)
I think we have a psychologist on site as well so if people are struggling or something like that, there's always someone to go an see which I think is very good.

Chat 3 (Eleni Poulovou)
It's not talked about so I'm not personally aware that there is even a mental health support available for students.

Chat 4 (Harry Costas)

For me personally, it's like if I don't keep up with the quality I usually deliver, then I get really stressed and I know some of my peers have that problem.

The reporter continues to talk over the facts appearing on screen:
‘As over half a million students started university in 2017 in the UK alone, we have seen a rise in the number of students developing mental health illnesses such as depression and anxiety disorders.

At Leeds university there has been a 50% increase in demand over the past 5 years for student counselling, with a 12% rise this year alone. The university of Birmingham revealed that there has been a 5-6% annual increase in demand in the past 10 years.

We interviewed Kate Woodrow, head of counselling at Middlesex University, to ask about the under lining issues and the taboo surrounding mental health.

INTERVIEW

There are a number of factors that work for students, first being the reality of financial stresses.
Higher education students in the UK are probably the most financially burdened. So one of the aspects I think of work is that students may feel they can't afford to be distressed and unwell. I think the second thing is stigma, despite the consistent message that 1 in 4 of us will experience psychological distress at some point. There's quite a lot of social pressure you know, to have fun, these are the best years of your life. Being depressed, being anxious, experiencing hearing voices is not something that's in the narrative about what a 'cool' or 'healthy' student should be experiencing, so I think those things those things that work can make it very difficult for higher education students to pause and to think about what they're experiencing and acknowledge that they might need some extra support.

‘According to the report from The Guardian’s annual Student Experience survey, 60%, of first year students find it difficult to cope with the social or academic aspects of university life. They also discovered that 30% found stress of studying difficult to cope with. 10% struggling living independently.

Reporter closes the report with help and advice to get support if you're going through a mental illness:

As explored through the report there are various things you can do to improve your mental health such as seeing mental health advisors at University. You can also visit sites such as Childline, NHS mental health and Mind where you can access a range of resources.

The real aim for University's should be trying to prevent mental health developing in students along with having suitable strategies in place to help students struggling.
